By 2013, my blog was making just barely enough money through ad networks and affiliate revenue that it finally made sense for my husband to stay home so that I could focus on blogging full time. We were excited to make this leap, but truth be told, it was also terrifying. Suddenly I was the sole breadwinner, and the pressure I felt was enormous.
MY FIRST PRODUCT
Intrinsically I realized that I needed to begin generating an income that I had more control over, and one that more effectively leveraged this audience I had built up, but I had no idea how to do that. At the same time, I had a lot of friends asking what I was doing differently with my blog that had allowed my husband to quit his job.
In response to all the questions, I decided to write a book called How to Blog for Profit (Without Selling Your Soul). I didn’t really even expect to sell many copies, I just figured it would be something to share with my friends. After all, at Living Well Spending Less, I never even talked about the business of blogging.
Amazingly enough though, How to Blog for Profit became an instant success. The day it launched, it made it to #2 on the Amazon bestseller list, and it stayed at the top of the blogging category for years. It has sold close to 100,000 copies and taught countless bloggers the basics of how to start a profitable blog.
But what that first product taught ME was something totally different. You see, I had never really considered having products before accidentally launching How to Blog for Profit. It seemed SO out of my league. And yet, the success of How to Blog for Profit opened up a whole new world to me, one that I realized had the potential to be a whole lot more profitable, as well as give me far more control over my own destiny.
NO TURNING BACK
I’m not going to lie–After How to Blog for Profit, I became a product creating MACHINE. I wrote four more books, which earned spots on the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, USA Today, and Amazon bestseller lists. I developed an online course for bloggers called Elite Blog Academy, and then created our first physical product, the Living Well Planner, which we sell in in our online shop along with a variety of supplementary products and accessories.
Today, my company has a lineup of more than 25 different products for two very distinct audiences. And since we first began creating products in 2013, our income has increased dramatically every single year. 2013 was our first 6-figure year, and in 2014 we quadrupled our revenue. The next year, in 2015 we had our first 7-figure year. In 2016 we nearly tripled our revenue, and now in 2017 we are on pace to double again.
When you think about how fast it has all gone, it’s pretty crazy, and even crazier when you consider that product sales now account for 90% of our revenue.
In fact, when I think about the fact that I’m able to provide a full time income for me and my family, just by doing something I LOVE, I almost have to pinch myself.
